A product can fit through an opening and still be awkward to use. Measure the usable space, the path into it, and the clearance needed for everyday movement.
Bring three measurements
- Opening: measure the narrowest width and height the product must pass through.
- Usable interior: measure around hinges, pipes, lips, shelves, and sloped walls.
- Working clearance: leave room for doors, drawers, handles, lids, and your hand.
Measure where the product will sit
Check the surface at the front, middle, and back. Small spaces are often not perfectly square. Use the smallest verified measurement when comparing it with product dimensions.
Check the route
For cabinets and pantries, confirm that the product can turn past the frame. For counters and sinks, look for faucets, outlets, backsplashes, and appliance doors that change the usable area.
Write down the limit
Record the maximum width, depth, and height that will work. Keep the note with you while shopping so a promising product does not become a guess.
